General corporate and M&A emerge most popular choice among law firm aspirants, 27% still unsure

General corporate and M&A was the most popular choice among students of the graduating batch of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) who said they would work in law firms upon graduation. 45% expressed a desire to work in this practice area. While real estate emerged a distant second with just 9% of students saying that they would opt for it, 27% said that they did not know what area of law they would work in.

These students are just two months away from completing their five-year BA. LLB. (Hons.) at India's trendsetting law school, located in suburban Nagarbhavi. The pressure to make choices concerning career direction has become even more acute since the students will welcome potential recruiters into their campus in the first week of April. This year, the student body that co-ordinates the recruitment process, the Recruitment Coordination Committee (RCC) has also tied up with Rainmaker to offer potential recruiters an online platform to interact with students without having to physically visit the campus.

Among the top 10 students in the batch, General corporate and M&A was not a popular choice with none saying that they would opt for that practice area. Real estate was the most popular choice in this group, with 40% of saying that they would work in this area. 40% said they did not know what area of law they would work in.

They overall popularity of General corporate and M&A showed in the lower half of the class and among students who had interned mostly in law firms during their final two years in law school, with 50% in each category saying that they would opt for it.
